Word was passed on, late in the afternoon, that an echidna (also known as Spiny Anteater) was seen, down by the Wilderness Retreat pool. Light was starting to fade but with a few adjustments to camera ....
then another was seen following day, the other side of the dry creek bed, same time, in fading light at 5.15 pm. It was a long shot away...
I've learnt from this site that the echidna is a solitary animal and not territorial.
looking like a little bear - imagine it stretching out like an accordian/squeezebox now
...hunting and gathering, with long 'snout' foraging for ants or termites. They also will eat larvae of beetles and earthworms.

On the first morning in Alice Springs, N.T., I'd taken a walk after breakfast to see if I could get an advance on any birding opportunity before the group met outside the foyer to get on board the coach.
What might be around the open areas behind my room ... a big carpark, and then high metal fencing like a tennis court! On the other side of the fence though was lots of native shrubbery, and I could hear little birds in there 'somewhere'.
There was movement on the ground --- OH, bunnies!
